Summarize anything on your Mac, instantly

Press Caps Lock+2 anywhere and the answer is there before you could have started reading. It runs on a very fast model served by Cerebras: first words in about 0.7 seconds, a full summary in about one.

Free. Runs on Hammerspoon. Needs an OpenRouter API key.

Played at real speed: the median of recent runs.

How it works

It works on whatever you’re looking at

Text selected in a text field

Select a paragraph in an email you are writing, pick “Clean up”, and the selection is rewritten in place.

Text selected anywhere else

Highlight part of a web page, a PDF or an email you received, and the answer opens in a floating panel.

Nothing selected

It reads what is on screen, from a screenshot. On an article in Chrome, it pulls the article’s text instead, so long posts work too.

Follow-up questions

Ask a follow-up right in the panel: “make it two sentences”, “what does this mean for me?”.

Ask for details

Select part of an answer and click “Ask for details” (or triple-click a paragraph) to dig into it. You keep your place, so you can stack several.

Your own instructions

Beyond the three presets, type anything: “translate to French”, “list the action items”, “find the weak argument”.

Under the hood

A Hammerspoon script that sends your request to fast open models through OpenRouter.

  • Qwen on Cerebras by default, whose chips generate text many times faster than typical GPU serving: a 1,000-character summary is done in about a second.
  • When that provider is busy, it retries on another one automatically.
  • Your API key stays in your Mac’s Keychain, and nothing goes anywhere except OpenRouter.

Install

One command, whether or not you have Hammerspoon

Paste this into Terminal. It installs Hammerspoon if you don’t have it, adds the tool, and offers to turn Caps Lock into a Hyper key (it asks first).

curl -fsSL https://flocrivello.com/summarize/install.sh | bash
  1. Allow Hammerspoon in System Settings › Privacy & Security, under Accessibility and Screen Recording.
  2. Press Caps Lock+2 anywhere, if you let the installer make Caps Lock your Hyper key. Otherwise press ⌘⌥⌃⇧2.
  3. Paste an OpenRouter API key when asked. You can create one at openrouter.ai/keys.

Prefer to do it by hand? Download summarize.zip, unzip it into ~/.hammerspoon/summarize/, and add require("summarize").start() to ~/.hammerspoon/init.lua.

Questions

What does it cost?

The tool is free. You pay OpenRouter for the model calls, which for summaries is usually a fraction of a cent each.

Where does my text go?

Only to OpenRouter, to get the answer. Your API key is stored in your Mac’s Keychain, not in a file.

What is Hyper?

All four modifiers at once: ⌘⌥⌃⇧. Hyper+2 means pressing them together with 2. The installer can turn Caps Lock into Hyper for you; Caps Lock then stops toggling capitals, and holding it works like holding ⌘⌥⌃⇧ in every app.

How do I give Caps Lock back?

Remove “capsLockHyper = true” from the Summarize line in ~/.hammerspoon/init.lua, reload Hammerspoon, then run: hidutil property --set '{"UserKeyMapping":[]}'

Can I change the presets or prompts?

Yes: choose Settings in the prompt box to edit the instructions behind each mode.
